CINCINNATI — Cintas Corp. has reached an agreement with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) pertaining to all automated and semiautomated laundry facilities under OSHA’s federal jurisdiction, the agency reports. The agreement resolves six cases relating to citations against Cintas for safety hazards at laundry facilities across the country, including hazards that led to the March 2007 death of Cintas worker Eleazar Torres-Gomez.

In August 2007, we almost doubled the number of pounds that we process by taking on two extremely large customers.

Both customers use a larger-than-normal amount of washcloths, bath blankets and thermal blankets. Our challenge has been to find a way to speed up the process of inspecting, stacking and counting washcloths into stacks of 50.

This had never been a great concern of ours, because we were blessed with an elderly lady who proficiently produced washcloths at an unbelievable rate.

MELBOURNE, Australia — A worker in the Del Brocco Laundry in the Melbourne suburb of Heidelberg West was crushed between the rollers of a flatwork ironer last week when he somehow became caught in the machine, according to WorkSafe Victoria, which manages workplace safety in the state.

The victim is Vietnamese and came to Australia earlier this year, so investigators are trying to determine if language or inadequate instruction could've contributed to the accident.

The older I get, the more surprised I am by the major changes happening in the world around me. This year has definitely been one of rapid change.

The demise of National Linen from the leading commercial provider of healthcare textiles to a footnote in history represents a classic case study of management mistakes. I’m hopeful that someone with first-hand knowledge will write the definitive case study on what happened. My fear is that if this isn’t done, then we’ll see other companies make the same mistakes.
