DES MOINES, Iowa — G&K Services was recently fined $450,000 for negligently discharging wastewater from its Pleasant Hill, Iowa, facility in violation of the Clean Water Act (CWA), according to U.S. Attorney Nicholas A. Klinefeldt.

G&K Services, which offers uniform and facility services, previously pleaded guilty to the offense, Klinefeldt adds.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — MacIntosh Services is a large commercial linen rental supply company in the scenic Lehigh Valley area of Northeastern Pennsylvania. From its headquarters here, the company supplies not only table linens and napkins, but also uniforms, chef apparel, aprons and towels to restaurants, hotels and other facilities throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

The company uses more than 90,000 gallons of clean water a day. In fact, MacIntosh Services is the largest single user of municipal water in the Bethlehem metropolitan area.

COCOA, Fla. — Guardian Manufacturing Inc. has completed its new research and development facility in Eustis, Fla.

Headed by Senior Scientist Thoram Charanda, the facility supports all Guardian Manufacturing divisions with product development, product support testing, process modeling for new applications, and process verification for existing operations.

It’s estimated that U.S. commercial laundry operations consume more than 150 billion gallons of fresh water annually in processing at least 60 billion pounds of soiled linens from hospitals, hotels, correctional facilities, universities and industrial sites.

So, it just makes good business sense for laundries to consider installing systems to recycle or reuse water, but some operators in drought-ridden parts of the country are turning to this technology out of necessity.

DAYTON, Ohio — The president of Multi-Service, a Dayton industrial laundry, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court last week to discharging wastewater in violation of federal standards.

Melvin L. Tatman, 61, the company's sole shareholder, is to be sentenced later this year. He pleaded himself and his company guilty to knowingly violating a pretreatment standard of the Clean Water Act, a felony, and to two misdemeanor counts of negligently violating pretreatment standards.

GOOCHLAND, Va. — The laundry at the Virginia Correctional Center for Women recently switched to using a nonphosphorus detergent as the state investigates the source of foam found in the James River, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports.

Water samples taken in early June detected extremely high levels of phosphorus, which can fuel the growth of algae.

Some witnesses have reported seeing the white, lacy foam covering the river from bank to bank, the newspaper reports.
