WASHINGTON — UNITE HERE has rejoined the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) four years after it and several other unions broke away to form the rival Change to Win coalition.

“Our 265,000 members belong in the ‘House of Labor,’” says John Wilhelm, president of UNITE HERE.

NEW YORK — Labor union Workers United reports that it has filed criminal complaints against Aramark Corp., accusing the company of stealing from its employees by collecting union dues from paychecks without turning them over to their union.

Aramark claims that a labor dispute between Workers United and UNITE HERE makes it unclear which union should get the dues, so it’s holding them in escrow until the issue is sorted out.

NEW YORK — Judge William H. Pauley of the Southern District of New York Court has dismissed Cintas Corp.’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) lawsuit against UNITE HERE, the International Brotherhood of the Teamsters, and the Change to Win coalition.

“The complaint is not [a] ‘short and plain statement,’” says Pauley in his ruling. “It is a manifesto by a Fortune 500 company that is more a public relations piece than a pleading.”

PHILADELPHIA — Workers United, a new union composed of hundreds of former UNITE HERE members, has announced an affiliation with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). The agreement creates the Workers United Conference of SEIU.

IRVINE, Calif. — Prudential Overall Supply has reached a new labor agreement with UNITE HERE that provides employees with expanded pay and benefits, the company reports.

The three-year contract affects employees in seven California plants, including Van Nuys, Carson, Cerritos, Riverside, Vista, and two Los Angeles locations. The agreement provides employees with pay increases and enhancements to benefits, and settles all outstanding contract issues between Prudential and UNITE HERE, the company says.

CINCINNATI – The battle between Cintas Corp. and UNITE HERE shows no signs of weakening, as each fired a new salvo at the other last week.

Cintas filed a federal racketeering lawsuit against UNITE HERE, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and Change to Win on Wednesday, alleging extortion in the labor unions’ efforts to organize Cintas workers.

LAS VEGAS — In two separate shift meetings Nov. 13, members of the Culinary Workers Union Local 226 voted overwhelmingly to approve a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) with textile services company Mission Industries, the union reports.

The new contract covers approximately 1,600 workers at six Las Vegas industrial laundry plants that launder sheets, towels, uniforms and linens for about 50 southern Nevada hotels and casinos.

NEW YORK — Pillowtex Corp., the company that marketed towels, sheets, blankets and other products under brand names like Cannon® and Fieldcrest® before abruptly closing in July 2003, has agreed to a settlement with the 6,000-plus workers it laid off, UNITE HERE! announced Tuesday.

The settlement, if approved by a bankruptcy court, will provide compensation for 24 1⁄2 days of pay, at an average of $2,000 per worker.
