LOS ANGELES — The port of Venice, Italy, this week presented Crystal Cruises’ Crystal Serenity with the environmental Venice Blue Flag award for the third straight year, while the Hyatt Regency Irvine announced that it has received The California Integrated Waste Management Board’s 2009 Waste Reduction Award (WRAP).

WASHINGTON — Make that six straight years of sales growth for the U.S. lodging industry.

Total industry revenue rose in 2008 to $140.6 billion, compared to $139.4 billion the previous year, according to The 2009 Lodging Industry Profile published by the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA). Figures are for year-end 2008. 2009 data won’t be available until mid-2010.

WASHINGTON — Operations that provide laundry services to Marriott hotels should be excited by the hospitality company's recent announcement that it intends to add between 58,000 and 69,000 rooms in North America through 2009, driven by conversions and ground-up select service hotel construction. Marriott anticipates adding more than 30,000 hotel rooms outside North America.

PORTAGE, Ind. – Hilton Hotels Corp. has opened its third centralized laundry, Meritex Portage, which provides laundry services to Hilton-branded hotels in the Chicago area.

The new plant replaces the workhorse in-house centralized laundry that was located on the fifth floor of the Hilton Chicago, says Mark Lindbloom, Hilton Hotels’ corporate director of laundry operations. That laundry is perhaps best known as the setting for the climax of Harrison Ford’s 1993 film, The Fugitive.
