CINCINNATI — Textile fabricator can better support Las Vegas clients from new facility

CINCINNATI — SK Textile, a custom fabricator of drapery, bedding and accessories, has partnered with global healthcare and hospitality textile provider Standard Textile to open a new manufacturing facility in Las Vegas.

The facility will provide improved convenience and efficiency for SK Textile’s Las Vegas clients. It allows SK Textile to better support local hotels, purchasing companies, and designers in providing customized interior solutions for the hospitality industry, and positions the company to respond more quickly to increasing demand.

“We are experiencing a very exciting period of growth and expansion in Las Vegas,” says Kim Heiman, SK Textile president. “The manufacturing facility in Las Vegas will help SK Textile meet market demand and establishes a presence near our customers.”

The partnership allows SK Textile to leverage Standard Textile’s vertically integrated global infrastructure and positions SK Textile for additional growth.

The latest state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Las Vegas became fully operational earlier this month and will serve to augment SK Textile’s production capacity in Vernon, Calif.

ATLANTA — Dates for Clean 2013 in New Orleans have been rescheduled to June 20-22, a Thursday-Saturday show.

“This allows attendees to return home on Sunday to start their workweek on Monday, or gives them an opportunity to stay and enjoy a day in New Orleans after the show,” says David Cotter, chairman of Clean 2013 and CEO of Textile Care Allied Trades Association.

Original dates for the 2013 show announced at Clean 2011 were Friday-Sunday, June 21-23. The three-day-show format in 2013, the first since 1981, is in response to exhibitor and attendee feedback. The show will run three full days rather than close early on the last day to allow time for everyone to fully experience the exhibits.

The 2015 exhibition in Atlanta and the 2017 gathering in Las Vegas were also announced as three-day shows, but Cotter says the biennial event could return to four days if that proves to work better for exhibitors and attendees.

Clean 2011 in Las Vegas drew 11,200 people, a 13% increase over Clean ’09, according to show manager Riddle & Associates. In addition to attendees from all 50 states and Washington D.C., there were visitors from 87 other countries.

LAS VEGAS – Brady Industries reports that it has acquired the resort laundry division of southern Nevada commercial laundry service supplier Mission Industries. Terms were not announced.

Joining Brady’s linen division are 884 employees and three processing facilities. The acquisition brings Brady’s workforce to 2,011, making it one of the nation’s largest resort laundry service providers, the company says.

Brady will now process approximately 1 million pounds of laundry per day in its six Las Vegas facilities.

“I am thrilled to welcome Mission Industries to the Brady Industries family,” says Brady Industries CEO Travis Brady. “We believe in Las Vegas, and this acquisition provides us with the people and resources to continue to service our customers into the future.”

Headquartered in Las Vegas since 1947, Brady Industries is a third-generation, family-owned, full-line janitorial supply and commercial laundry services company.

Brady Linen Services was started in 2000 to address the demand for higher quality and service in the evolving Las Vegas market. It expanded steadily from its original 40,000-square-foot plant, opening a second facility in 2006 and a third in 2009.

CHICAGO — Eighty-seven percent of respondents to June’s unscientific Wire survey said they attended Clean ’11 in Las Vegas, and 86.4% of them reported being “fully satisfied” or “somewhat satisfied” with their experience as a whole.

These attendees sought information about a variety of products and services. Among the exhibit categories that respondents sought out, washers, dryers, folders and material-handling systems were mentioned most often.

Nearly 83% of respondents said they are more likely to do business with a certain manufacturer, distributor or supplier because of their trip to Clean. Thirteen percent said they aren’t sure, and 4% said they aren’t more likely to do business.

Most respondents attended Clean on Tuesday (82.6%), Monday and Wednesday (69.6% for both days). On Thursday, the final show day, only 47.8% attended.

The 2013 Clean Show in New Orleans is scheduled for three days over a weekend (Friday through Sunday). Virtually everyone surveyed applauded the show committee’s decision to shorten the next event by a day, but some wondered if Clean’s quality and size would remain comparable.

Clean’s sponsors presented more than 40 hours of educational sessions, including several offered by international trade associations. Approximately 52% of Wire respondents said they didn’t attend a session this year, while 30.4% reported attending only one session and 13% attended two. The remaining 4.3% sat in on three, and no one reported attending four or more sessions.

Respondents who didn’t attend Clean in Las Vegas most often cited budgetary constraints or sending someone else on staff as the reasons. Twenty percent said they had no interest in attending.

While the American Laundry News Wire survey presents a snapshot of readers’ viewpoints at a particular moment, it should not be considered scientific.

Subscribers to Wire e-mails—distributed twice weekly—are invited to participate in a brief industry survey each month. The survey is conducted online via a partner website. Readers are encouraged to participate, as a greater number of responses will help to better define operator opinions and industry trends.

LAS VEGAS — Bestroom™, a digital platform developed by restroom sanitation products manufacturer F-MATIC, uses a mobile application and web interface to give service providers and restroom owners instant feedback to streamline janitorial services and inventory management.

The company unveiled Bestroom at the Clean Show (booth 1916).

“Bestroom allows the people who own, maintain, service and supply restroom facilities to not only receive feedback in real time, but to act on that information and interact with partners throughout the supply and service chain,” says F-MATIC Chief Operating Officer David Bernstein.

The Bestroom mobile app allows not only general rate and search functions, but also the ability to sort by category, attributes and proximity to the users’ current location. Users can also provide specific feedback for facility owners, right down to specifying a lack of soap, a plumbing problem, a dirty floor and more.

LAS VEGAS — Companies often use the Clean Show to unveil new products or services to the industry. Here is a sampling reported to American Laundry News:

Jensen USA: Butterfly Fox Garment Folder

Jensen recently launched the new Butterfly Fox for the feeding, folding, sorting and stacking of garments.

In combination with the automatic Lobster system hanger, it is possible to automate the entire work process chain, Jensen says. With many options, the Fox can be configured to meet all requirements to perfectly fold heavy garments, microfiber textiles, overalls and bib overalls, the company adds.

The Butterfly Fox folds, sorts and stacks basically one’s entire professional wardrobe – in one hour, as many as 900 pieces can be processed. The Fox contains fewer moving parts in the new hanger-unloading unit, which facilitates constant high performance and offers the greatest availability.

Proteus Solutions: Proteus™ Activator Washing System

Proteus Solutions LLC, a joint venture between Standard Textile Co. and Diversey, presented the Proteus™ Activator Washing System.

The system combines a unique activator unit with proprietary chemistry to deliver a fully integrated laundry cleaning and sanitizing solution. The unit utilizes electro-chemically activated water to generate cleaning agents that are combined with specially formulated chemicals. The system is backed by Proteus Solutions’ deep knowledge of textiles and the laundry process to provide customers with a custom solution for their commercial laundry needs.

It is the last day of the show, and my home is calling me. It is nice to see Las Vegas and the Clean Show, but there is no place like home. Yesterday was a great day to get answers and visit with vendors. The third day is a little less busy than the first two. Today is a day to make final contacts, nail down the need for proposals and then hit the road. If you missed this show, you really missed a good one.

LAS VEGAS — WesVic Systems has signed a deal with Sumisho Inax Corp., the largest distributor to drycleaners and industrial laundries in Japan, to distribute WesVic’s PieceCounter production monitoring system to the Japanese market. Inax has more than 4,800 customers, WesVic says.

“Inax is the largest and most respected distributor in Japan,” says Chad Boucher, president of WesVic Systems. “We are very excited to be working with Inax to introduce the PieceCounter system to such a large and important market. We look forward to a very successful partnership with Inax.”

After seeing the PieceCounter in use at Homma Dry Cleaners, a drycleaner in Tokyo, Inax invited WesVic Systems to display the PieceCounter in its booth at the International Laundry & Dry Cleaning Show 2010 last December in Tokyo to test customer interest.

Receiving positive response from show attendees, WesVic Systems and Inax have been working to finish the PieceCounter for the Japanese market by monitoring use by a customer with excellent knowledge and experience in drycleaning systems.

[Editor's Note: This article was updated June 8 to correct the type of accounting system utilized by the association.]

LAS VEGAS — Linda Fairbanks, the director of academic affairs for the Association for Linen Management (ALM) for several years, has been promoted to executive director of academic affairs, ALM Board President Randy Wendland announced at the Clean Show.

Executive Director Jim Thacker resigned unexpectedly in February, and the ALM board decided to consolidate the position with another and promote Fairbanks rather than hire a replacement.

Fairbanks has overseen ALM’s educational offerings, including the American Laundry & Linen College (ALLC), and now finds herself heading an association that faces mounting financial problems and dwindling membership numbers.

During Sunday’s annual business meeting, it was revealed that ALM has approximately $100,000 in unpaid bills. Chief Financial Officer Paul Jewison says the association is shifting from a cash accounting system to an accrual based system to better track spending.

LAS VEGAS — The Clean Executive Committee (CEC) announced sites and dates for the next three Clean Shows during a press conference earlier today. As reported Sunday by American Trade Magazines, New Orleans’ Morial Convention Center will host the event over three days in 2013.

In 2015, the Clean Show returns to Atlanta, which last hosted the exhibition in 1987. Las Vegas has been chosen to host the 2017 event.

Show dates are:

  • 2013 – June 21-23, 2013
  • 2015 – April 17-19, 2015
  • 2017 — June 19-22, 2017

The 2013 and 2015 dates reflect a more concise and efficient three-day format designed to give exhibitors and attendees a better value for their time and money invested in the Clean Show, the CEC says.

If the three-day experiment doesn’t work as well as hoped, the CEC could return to the four-day format, according to David Cotter, CEO of the Textile Care Allied Trades Association and Clean 2011 Chairman.
