With news of the influenza A (H1N1) infection, AKA “swine flu,” spreading faster than the illness itself, it might be easy to overlook how prepared for pandemic flu the laundry industry might be. After a public scare over the avian flu, many hospitals and other healthcare facilities are better equipped for such an outbreak than public perception might indicate.

CHICAGO — Conference attendees from the American Society for Healthcare Environmental Services (ASHES) of the American Hospital Association donated $1,256.94 to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul — San Antonio Chapter (SVDP).

As part of ASHES’ fourth annual Hearts and Hands Event, attendees were asked to donate $1 each to raise funds for the local charity. Sodexo Health Care Services and Wexford Labs, both ASHES sponsors, matched the donations raised. ASHES members, Sodexo and Wexford Labs raised a grand total of $3,770.82 for SVDP.

CHICAGO — The American Society for Healthcare Environmental Services (ASHES) and the Association for Linen Management (ALM) have agreed to establish a new pricing program that will enable their members to obtain discounted products and services from either organization.

“We hope to enhance benefits to our members and create synergy between healthcare environmental services and linen management,” says Jim Thacker, ALM’s executive director.

HOLLISTON, Mass. — James P. “Jim” Connors, CHESP, vice president of the American Society for Healthcare Environmental Services (ASHES) board of directors, died Sunday after a battle with pancreatic cancer, ASHES reports.

Connors, 61, was the director of environmental/textile services at Rhode Island Hospital and The Miriam Hospital, both in Providence, R.I.
