CHICAGO — The details of the recently passed healthcare-reform bills and their impact on businesses can be confusing. A recent webcast from accounting firm Grant Thornton LLP offered an analysis of the reforms and their impact.

WASHINGTON — Several Democratic senators have decided to drop a central provision of the Employee Free Choice Act (H.R. 800, S. 1041) — the so-called “card-check” provision — to help secure a filibuster-proof 60 votes.

The provision would have required employers to recognize a union as soon as a majority of workers signed cards in support of it. Currently, employers can demand a secret-ballot election supervised by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).

DES MOINES, Iowa — Iowa Health System has donated 50,000 scrub tops and pants to Project CURE that will help doctors and nurses in developing countries provide a more sterile environment in locations that lack basic medical resources, the company says.

“Our hospitals support numerous community organizations and programs, and we’re proud to donate these resources to help others in need,” says Dan McDow, chief operating officer for Iowa Health System’s Consolidated Services.
