New York State Industries for the Disabled Honors Bates Troy, Schrauger

ALBANY, N.Y. — 2012 Corporate Partner of the Year and Employee of the Year

ALBANY, N.Y. — Bates Troy Healthcare Linen Services , a Binghamton, N.Y.-based industrial laundry, and employee Stephen Schrauger were honored here Sept. 10 as New York State Industries for the Disabled (NYSID) 2012 Corporate Partner of the Year and Employee of the Year.

For more than 35 years, NYSID — a not-for-profit member agency organization — has met the purchasing needs of state and local government agencies while advancing employment for New Yorkers with disabilities. NYSID acts as a “virtual storefront” for a statewide network of 165 community rehabilitation agencies and private-sector business partners to employ skilled people with disabilities in production facilities and community-based jobs.

Bates Troy, a third-generation, family-owned industrial laundry and dry cleaner, has long been committed to employing a diverse workforce. Through a partnership with ACHIEVE and Country Valley Industries (CVI), individuals with disabilities in Broome and Tioga counties have had the opportunity to work on NYSID Preferred Source laundry contracts at the CVI production center in Johnson City and the Westside Binghamton Bates Troy facility since 2003.

“We are proud and honored to receive this distinguished award from NYSID,” says Ara Kradjian, Bates Troy’s chief operating officer. “Our partnership with them has been valued, fruitful and ongoing for a decade now, and it will continue.”

More than 100 Binghamton residents fold and process laundry each day for customers that include SUNY Upstate Medical University, nursing facilities, veterans’ homes and the Greater Binghamton Health center.

Schrauger recently celebrated a decade of working with the Bates Troy partnership. He takes great pride in helping the laundry satisfy its healthcare customers.

“I work on the bath blanket folder,” he says. “I really like my job. Thank you for the money. I like money. I’m going to buy a bike.”

Clean ’11 Product Debuts: Proteus Solutions, Dickies Occupational Wear, Sobel Westex

Proteus Solutions: Proteus™ Activator Washing System

Proteus Solutions LLC, a joint venture between Standard Textile Co. and Diversey, presented the Proteus™ Activator Washing System.

The system combines a unique activator unit with proprietary chemistry to deliver a fully integrated laundry cleaning and sanitizing solution. The unit utilizes electro-chemically activated water to generate cleaning agents that are combined with specially formulated chemicals. Designed to fit within a customer’s existing facilities, the system makes water work harder to clean fabrics as well as, or even better than, current methods, the company claims.

The system is backed by Proteus Solutions’ deep knowledge of textiles and the laundry process to provide customers with a custom solution for their commercial laundry needs.

SMSC Laundry Supports Charity by Washing Blankets, Donating Linens

PRIOR LAKE, Minn. — Each Christmas, generous donors give “gently used” blankets to the local charitable organization called Bridging for distribution to local families, and approximately 8,000 blankets were donated this past holiday season through the annual Bring a Blanket drive co-sponsored by Subway Restaurants.

Of those, about 1,000 were slightly soiled and in need of washing, so Bridging turned to the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) Laundry Facility, which washed, dried and hand-folded them at no charge.

UniTech Earns Environmental Leadership Award

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — UniTech Services Group, a subsidiary of UniFirst Corp., has earned an environmental leadership award from Exelon Corp., one of the nation’s largest nuclear power providers, UniTech says.

In presenting the award, Exelon recognized UniTech’s lengthy record of providing protective clothing and decontamination laundering services that are environmentally responsible, safe and of superior quality, the company added.

Cintas Transitions to NPE-Free Detergents

CINCINNATI — Cintas Corp., in conjunction with Washing Systems LLC (WSI), has become the first major industrial launderer to make a company-wide transition from a nonylphenol ethoxylate- (NPE) based detergent to a new, more environmentally friendly detergent in its industrial laundry facilities, Cintas says.

With more than 175 facilities in North America, Cintas has begun the transition in several of its locations and plans to be completely NPE-free by the end of 2008.

ARAMARK Uniform Services Acquires Overall Laundry Services

BURBANK, Calif. — ARAMARK Uniform Services has acquired Overall Laundry Services, an Everett, Wash.-based company that provides customers with uniform rentals, leases and sales, as well as related merchandise programs, according to ARAMARK. Terms were not disclosed in the announcement.

The acquisition, completed earlier this month, includes Overall’s nine facility locations across the Pacific Northwest and its main operations in Everett.
