MIDLAND, Texas — Midland Memorial Hospital (MMH) is hoping to work with other regional hospitals to clean up — its laundry, that is.

VHA of Texas, part of a nationwide network of community-owned hospitals, is looking into the possibility of forming a regional laundry and linen co-op with MMH, Medical Center Hospital in Odessa and hospitals in Amarillo, Lubbock, San Angelo and Abilene.

ATLANTA — Guided tours of a central healthcare laundry plant and a huge commercial laundry plant highlighted the activities Feb. 28 during the 2007 Tech/Plant Summit hosted by the Textile Rental Services Association (TRSA).

TRSA bused Summit attendees to WellStar Health System’s 86,000-square-foot plant in nearby Marietta, and to Alsco’s mega-facility in Doraville covering 260,000 square feet.

I believe the purchase of National Linen by ALSCO means that a number of healthcare facilities will be changing vendors over the next several years.

ALSCO doesn’t feel that servicing hospitals falls into its field of expertise. Unless ALSCO changes its corporate philosophy, a highly unlikely event, it’ll be looking to shed a number of hospital accounts over the next several years. I’ve been told that ALSCO will honor existing contracts but that it’s not interested in extending or renewing any of them.

ATLANTA — Private equity firm Kelly Capital sold significantly all assets of its National Linen & Uniform Service (NLUS) affiliate to Salt Lake City-based Alsco just prior to the Labor Day weekend. Terms weren't disclosed.

The deal includes branches in Florence, Ala.; Doraville, Atlanta and Savannah, Ga.; Shreveport, La.; St. Louis, Mo.; Charlotte, N.C.; Charleston and Columbia, S.C.; Knoxville, Memphis and Nashville, Tenn.; Lubbock, Texas; and Alexandria, Portsmouth and Roanoke, Va.
