PHILADELPHIA — The Missouri Water Environment Association (MWEA) recently honored ARAMARK Uniform Services (AUS) with the Gold Award for its commitment to preserving, protecting and improving the quality of Missouri’s water environment, ARAMARK reports.

The award recognizes the company’s compliance in managing wastewater from its Springfield-based industrial laundry facility. It is the seventh consecutive year AUS has received the honor.

“It recognizes our team’s diligence in ensuring that we reduce our environmental footprint while delivering exceptional operational results,” says Cavin Cowan, AUS general manager.

Operating five days a week, the facility processes approximately 24,000 garments each day and treats approximately 55,000 gallons of wastewater.

The treatment system includes a heat reclaimer that recovers and reuses the heat from the wastewater (wash-water temperature is heated to 160 F), reducing the plant’s gas use by 15%. In addition, a water-reuse system minimizes clean-water use by 20%, saving 2.6 million gallons per year.

PHILADELPHIA — ARAMARK Uniform Services (AUS) is rolling out 25 hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) into its national fleet and anticipates having 78 hybrid step vans motoring along its service routes in 28 states by spring.

ARAMARK says it is the first commercial uniform supplier to introduce HEVs. The launch was made possible by a $2.7 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy and the Maryland Clean Cities Program, which is dedicated to stimulating alternative fuel and advanced technology in the transportation sector.

WASHINGTON — ARAMARK Uniform Services is expanding its fleet of delivery trucks by adding 50 hybrid vehicles. The addition of the alternative-fuel vehicles (AFV) will increase the fleet’s energy efficiency and help protect the air quality in areas where the trucks will be deployed, ARAMARK says.

ARAMARK is accelerating this program thanks to a grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Maryland Clean Cities Program and funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

DALLAS — Just as the sun was coming up, the first bus pulled out of the parking lot of the Hilton DFW Lakes, host site of the 2008 Textile Rental Services Association (TRSA) Tech/Plant Summit.

You have to get an early start, you see, if you plan on visiting four plants in one morning.

Since the Tech/Plant Summit began five years ago, plant tours have been a staple. The events have featured trips to industrial, linen supply, healthcare and dust control operations but never all in one.

MOBILE, Ala. — Spontaneous combustion sparked a July 10 fire here at ARAMARK Uniform Services that caused an estimated $1 million in damage to the large, one-story, metal-frame building, according to Mobile fire investigators.

The fire, reported around 8 p.m., appears to have originated in the sorting and folding area.

"Investigators determined that one of the sorting containers contained a large amount of oily rags and spontaneously combusted, causing the fire," a fire-rescue department press release says.
