RICHMOND, Ky. — Organizations' complementary missions, histories make relationship "perfect fit," says ALM president

RICHMOND, Ky. — The Association for Linen Management (ALM) and Universal-UniLink Purchasing Association have entered into a cooperative agreement that will bring value and benefit to members of both organizations by sharing educational programs and purchasing discounts, the organizations report.

ALM and Universal-UniLink members will receive information about the partnership benefits and how member businesses can take advantage of educational and discount purchasing opportunities.

“Both of our organizations’ missions and histories are so complementary that it made the relationship a perfect fit,” says ALM President Randy Wendland, CLLM. “ALM brings our educational programs and materials while Universal-UniLink offers our members access to the largest independent purchasing group of their kind.”

“The ALM Board approaches each opportunity focused on the needs of our members,” adds ALM Executive Director Linda Fairbanks. “We believe that through our partnership with Universal-UniLink, many businesses among our diverse member base will have the opportunity to leverage significant savings through group purchasing discounts.”

ALM membership comprises 35% on-premise/campus laundries, 34% central/commercial laundries and 11% cooperative laundries, in addition to members providing distribution services.

“This historic collaboration between ALM and Universal-UniLink has the potential to bring much benefit to both organizations,” says Allan Fowler, president of UPA. “We’re pleased to make ALM’s world-class training, education and certification available to our member companies. ALM’s programs will open new doors for our owners and operators as they gain certifications respected and required in the healthcare industry.

“Additionally, the cost and time our operators invest in training management-level staff will be reduced significantly by taking full advantage of ALM’s excellent offerings.”

RICHMOND, Ky. — Association deems annual conference “tremendous success”

RICHMOND, Ky. — The Association for Linen Management’s Educational Conference was deemed a “tremendous success,” with many aspects far exceeding the organizers’ expectations, according to an ALM press release. Of the 150 registrants at the event held last month in Louisville, Ky., 52% were first-time attendees.

Michael Burke, CLLM, director of environmental services at North Memorial Healthcare, was named the 2012 Heywood Wiley Manager of the Year, the association’s most prestigious honor. Wiley was one of the organization’s founding fathers.

Burke has more than 20 years of laundry experience and provides a “tremendous presence” in ALM’s Upper Mississippi Valley Chapter, where he serves on the Education Committee, the association says.

Other finalists for the award were Graham Skinner, RLLD, general manager of laundry services at Mission Hospital, and Danny Lenard, director of laundry service with Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.

The 2012 Allied Tradesperson of the Year winner was Craig Hanson, equipment sales consultant for Weinberg Equipment and Supply. He has 25 years of experience in the laundry industry and, like Burke, is an active member of the Upper Mississippi Valley Chapter where he serves on the Education Committee. He received the chapter’s Vendor of the Year award in 2011.

Other Allied Tradesperson finalists were Tony Cardillo, Standard Textile, and Karlton Kicklighter, Gurtler Industries.

Randy Wendland, CLLM, corporate director of laundry & textile services for HHA Services, was re-elected ALM president. Richard Griffin, CLLM, laundry manager for Keystone Lodge & Spa, will continue as vice president.

ALM members voted to allow allied trades partners to vote and serve as appointed directors. The association’s first appointee is Sarah James, MBA, RLLD, director of product development for IPA. James previously served on the ALM board when she worked in laundry/linen management.

The association also welcomed its newest staff member, Christina Horsley, who will oversee the development of ALM’s educational programs as professional development manager. Horsley brings 15 years of association management experience to her new role. Linda Fairbanks, who previously coordinated ALM’s educational offerings, is now executive director.

ALM’s next national meeting will take place in June 2013 in New Orleans during the Clean Show.

LAS VEGAS — Linda Fairbanks, the director of academic affairs for the Association for Linen Management (ALM) for several years, has been promoted to executive director of academic affairs, ALM Board President Randy Wendland announced at the Clean Show.

Executive Director Jim Thacker resigned unexpectedly in February, and the ALM board decided to consolidate the position with another and promote Fairbanks rather than hire a replacement.

Fairbanks has overseen ALM’s educational offerings, including the American Laundry & Linen College (ALLC), and now finds herself heading an association that faces mounting financial problems and dwindling membership numbers.

During Sunday’s annual business meeting, it was revealed that ALM has approximately $100,000 in unpaid bills. Chief Financial Officer Paul Jewison says the association is shifting from a cash accounting system to an accrual based system to better track spending.

RICHMOND, Ky. — The Association for Linen Management (ALM) announced via press release late Wednesday afternoon that Executive Director Jim Thacker had resigned.

“We thank Jim for his service and his recent chairmanship of the Clean committee,” ALM President Randy Wendland, CLLM, said in the press release. “Mr. Thacker served ALM over 10 years, and ALM wishes him the best in his new endeavors. Jim is currently exploring other professional opportunities.”

NEW ORLEANS — The Association for Linen Management (ALM) celebrated its successes of the past year during its 69th annual awards reception at a local hotel last night.

Steve Schiely, Good Samaritan Hospital, Dayton, Ohio, was named the 2009 Heywood Wiley Manager of the Year. Accepting the award in his absence was Barbara Bowen, a former Manager of the Year from Cedar Village, Mason, Ohio.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Richard Hoelscher earned the Association for Linen Management’s (ALM) highest management award when he was named the 2008 Heywood Wiley Manager of the Year during ALM’s Annual Educational Conference last Monday.

But the Association for Linen Management (ALM) wonders just how many companies are able to balance the three.

RICHMOND, Ky. – The Association for Linen Management (ALM) has approved a slate of officer candidates for election during its national conference this summer and Bart Carpenter, a laundry production coordinator from Oregon, is running unopposed for the association’s presidency.

Carpenter, who is currently ALM’s senior vice president, works at Oregon Correctional Enterprises, Deer Ridge Correctional Institution, in Madras, Ore.
