WARREN, Mich. — Local authorities are investigating a Wednesday night explosion that reduced Best Textile Services, a commercial laundry in this north Detroit suburb, to rubble.
Investigators from the Warren Fire Department and other agencies are trying to determine what caused the 8:15 p.m. blast that rattled homes and businesses several miles away.
They are looking into the possibility that the explosion was caused by a gas leak, says Warren Police Lt. Michael Torey, and local gas company Consumers Energy has been contacted.
No one was on site when the explosion occurred. The business owner reported that all employees had left by 5 p.m., Torey says.
Two drivers whose car windows were blown out as they were traveling nearby reported suffering minor abrasions from broken glass, he adds.
Warren Fire Commissioner Skip McAdams told the Detroit Free-Press that debris from the blast spread about 400 feet in all directions of the 5,000-square-foot building.
According to Best Textile Services’ website, the company provides commercial linen and textile supplies to clients in Warren and surrounding communities.
